It was the crowning achievement of NASA. The Viking III was a space shuttle that could hold 150 people, and was designed to orbit the earth for 28 days and nights.
You are Mike Dowell, an officer on the Viking III -- or at least you WERE.

Just as the magnificent ship the Viking III was leaving the Earth's atmosphere, something hut one of the engines, and the engine in question exploded. The ship then turned in one direction and started speeding back towards the earth.
Chaos reigned inside the Viking III. Engineers scrambled to get to the back of the ship so that they could identify what the problem was. Some people tried to figure out where on earth they would land, and some others tried desperately to make contact with Houston. Most, however, ran to the emergency pods that NASA had equipped to the Viking III with... It's just the beginning of the 15 chapter's story of the game.
